A28 Spanish General Elections

The campaign was far too long because it started after they had been pre-campaigning for at least three weeks prior to that. Are General Elections all over the world as frenetic as they are in Spain, with their massive meetings, their flyers, their posters, their journeys all over the country, their mud-flinging, their debates on television, their radio interviews? It all seems so exaggerated, particularly when we consider that unfortunately politicians are counting for less and less in this world ruled by the Banks, the WMF and the hefty nations like US, Russia, China.

But we have to keep Europe. The EU has top marks in human rights, over and above those other national blocks. And I think that the result of these elections has shown that Spaniards are basically sensible people, not so influenced by extremists who want to break Europe up, not impressed with the vituperative right-wing mud-flingers and they have voted for a Party and a Leader with solid, sensible ideas, progressive and humane with a genuine desire to keep the country inside the EU, to preserve the Spanish identity which they understand as a plural identity, not wrapped stiflingly in the Spanish flag to the exclusion of all else!

Government will be difficult because we are no long a bi-party nation. A lot of true democracy will be required as there are now many parties conforming the Spanish Parliament. But we've made a start in the right direction and can only hope that the next parliamentary term will be less fraught with sterile insults than the previous short one. If they all genuinely want to get the country on its feet, then they have to forget their own personal ambitions.
